OA Support : from July 2009 (currently being funded)Partner : Thailand Baptist Missionary FellowshipThis three year project will extend to recovered hill tribe drug addicts and other interested hill farmers the possibility of generating income through the production and marketing of Arabica Coffee. The selected highland area with 15 Karen villages is very suitable for Arabica coffee production, with altitudes between 800 and 1,000 metres. Activities will include the construction of a plant nursery for coffee seedlings and training in coffee propagation and production.
OA Support : no longer requires fundingPersonnel : Teerapap Yueyongtan and Mike MannThis project works with semi-nomadic tribal groups from the Thai highlands to help alleviate poverty, vulnerability and powerlessness. Its goals are:- to improve the general health of villagers by introducing proper diets - assisting in prevention of water and soil borne diseases through good sanitation and hygiene - to increase family income - to introduce food-balance family gardens - to improve agricultural income through small irrigation schemesA Fairtrade coffee co-operative helps villagers to earn a living.In 2009 a grant of £17,500 was provided to enable the project to purchase a new truck for a variety of transportation purposes around this widespread and hilly project area.You can watch a short YouTube video about Mike Mann's work in Thailand by clicking below.
