Vocational training - sewing. The project targets approximately 153 direct beneficiary families. The root cause of the communities' predicament is that having no way to come out of their impoverished life styles, the communities face a never ending cycle of poverty, undernourishment and lack of access to basic facilities such as hygienic sanitation and sustainable water sources. Early Childhood education also lacks facilities in order to provide a good quality education. Activities have been planned in the sectors of community mobilisation and strengthening, water sanitation and health promotion, early childhood education development and income generation, through a community participatory approach.

Sri Lanka, LEADS Water and Sanitation Project [SRI9]

Amount: £10.00

Quantity:

OA Support : from July 2010 (currently being funded)

Water and Sanitation Project. This project will provide water and sanitation in two districts of Sri Lanka: communities in Kurunegala and Ratnapura. Approximately two hundred families, will benefit from this three-year programme starting in July 2010. At the start of the project basic facilities such as personal hygiene, sanitation, access to water are of very poor standards. Education levels of the adults are at its lowest. Many parents haven't attended school at all. Children attend school but tend to drop out after grade 6- 7, having no inclination to continue their studies, either due to poor income or no family support. Children opt to work in the plantation or other daily paid labour jobs. With both the mother and father attending work, the children are left at a day care centre a facility provided by the plantation owners. However, poor nutrition, poor attention to children's cleanliness and no sanitation facilities, have also led to frequent diseases amongst children such as skin rashes and diarrhoea. With the line houses being in close proximity to each other the spread of the disease is very high, and almost always the diseases are infectious and as a result the children suffer from continued poor health. These problems will be tackled through the establishment and activities of Community Based Organisations in these districts. By 2013 it is anticipated that approximately 82 families will have access to safe water facilities and 38 toilets will have been constructed. This will hopefully achieve a reduction in water and sanitation diseases by 30%.

Sri Lanka, LEADS rural improvement project [SRI7]

OA Support : no longer requires funding

This project is an extension of what LEADS is already doing in the Kandy and Matara area, but focusing on food security. It aims to raise the living standards of around 280 families in rural communities through grants for small scale agricultural and animal husbandry projects, microenterprise loans and vocational training programmes. The proposal describes a 3 year programme from 2008, with a total budget of £15,000 and a cost per beneficiary family of £55.
