PROJECT : NEP27OA Support : from July 2009 (currently being funded)Co-ordinator: Rana Chuk (MCDS)The problems to be addressed in this project are the lack of safe drinking water, poor sanitation and the lack of skills to earn an income. Most of the people are dependent on agriculture, but due to lack of irrigation facilities harvests are poor. Over the three year period the construction of 200 toilets in the community will benefit 1200 people and sinking 100 tube wells will provide safe drinking water for 1800 of the population of over 3400. The increase in water supply will also bring benefits for human cleanliness, for kitchen garden production and for domestic animals. Voluntary health workers will be recruited and trained and group training in income generating skills will also be provided.More:
PROJECT : NEP26OA Support : from July 2009 (currently being funded)Co-ordinator: Rana Chuk (MCDS)This project, working in villages on the slopes of Mt Machhapuchhre north of Pokhara, is in a neglected area of Nepal. It is initially raising health awareness in the area followed by health training for women in partnership with the local (government) sub-health post, and then the construction of toilets and drinking water supply will begin. Local farmers will be given training in growing nutritious vegetables and encouraged to share their new knowledge with their neighbours.More:
PROJECT : NEP24OA Support : no longer requires fundingThe Raptipari team are working with village groups (which include some men as well as women). They help them identify and solve problems in their village by working together, for example repairing a road, or providing toilets. The team also organise a trainer to give classes when people request this e.g. in vegetable growing, or sewing, or literacy. Team members also visit schools to teach children about health and hygiene.
PROJECT : NEP13OA Support : no longer requires fundingCo-ordinator : Keith SmithThis project's objective is to establish a commercially viable fruit juice production and marketing enterprise. Contracts are signed for the purchase of fruit from local farmers, local people are managing and operating the plant, and juice is being marketed within Nepal. The first successful product was mandarin juice, followed by pear and mango (which experienced some quality problems). They are now adding apple juice to their production.Wonder Products is an 'equal opportunities employer' with a number of Tibetan refugees.Operation Agri is a partner with UMN in this project.
PROJECT : NEP25OA Support : no longer requires fundingManager: Bob McLeodThis project is a joint activity of Feba and Human Development and Community Services (HDCS) group in Nepal. It is developing a holistic radio ministry in the Okhuldunga region of central Nepal to promote health and development on a broad front, including womens empowerment issues, malnutrition, health awareness, child labour, access to water, sustainable micro-enterprise and better agricultural yields. The £10,000 grant awarded by OA will cover construction, delivery and erection of the transmission tower, studio equipment and computer and software for production. It is estimated that the broadcasts will reach half (78,000) of the population of the area, and 70% have access to radios. This will increase in later years.
PROJECT : NEP99OA Support : no longer requires fundingCo-ordinator : Philip McMillanThe Mahema project is a Christian business that buys essential oils such as lemon grass, citronella, and eucalyptus. The oils are produced by partner groups, who grow the plants and distill the oil from them - partners include Leprosy hospitals, and groups of widows. Operation Agri provided gas chromatography equipment, which analyses the oils, and proves their quality for export. Mahema employs women to bottle the oils, which are now being exported to Europe.
