Calculate your Carbon Emissions

Calculate your Carbon Emissions

You can offset the carbon dioxide of your road travel by making a donation to a project which reduces carbon production, as listed below. Two projects are now 'live,' with more to follow as we can arrange them with our partners overseas.

You can work out how much CO2 your journey generates, and how much you need to donate to one of the special OA projects to offset this.

Simply enter the fuel type your vehicle uses, the size of the engine, and the total distance you will be driving, then click 'Submit.' The amount of CO2 to offset will update as you go along.

Please note that there is a minimum charge of £5, which works out at about 2,000 miles, so if you can combine your mileage for several journeys, perhaps working it out annually, you will be offsetting your carbon production much more efficiently.

Solar Water Heater (Carbon offsetting at £7.50 per tonne CO2, CAR1)

Solar Water Heater (Carbon offsetting at £7.50 per tonne CO2, CAR1)

Sun-powered water heater for a family in Afghanistan.

These water heaters use no fuel other than the sun, so saving about a tonne of CO2 each year over the burning of conventional fuels. Although they are manufactured entirely in Afghanistan by local businesses, they are too expensive for most families to afford. By supporting this project you can offset your carbon dioxide production by subsidising one of these solar water heaters by 50%, bringing it within the reach of many families, and so contributing not only to the environment, but to the sustainable development of a community. Brilliant!

Cost to offset is £0.00.

Fuel Efficient Cooking Stove (Carbon offsetting at £8.20 per tonne CO2, CAR2)

Fuel Efficient Cooking Stove (Carbon offsetting at £8.20 per tonne CO2, CAR2)

Fuel efficient cooking stoves in Nepal

Most people in rural areas in Nepal use open fires for cooking, heating and lighting. This is very inefficient and uses significant quantities of firewood resulting in rapid deforestation. Open fires are a hazard to children, and the indoor smoke affects the health of women and children in particular. Collecting large volumes of firewood every day is a burden for the women and children.

Installing Nepali metal cooking stoves will save around 4 tonnes of CO2 each year. More than one item can be cooked simultaneously, the chimney stops the room being filled with smoke, there is less deforestation, adults have more time to seek income and children more time for education.

Cost to offset is £0.00.

How do we work this out?

The greenhouse gas emissions are calculated in accordance with DEFRA's 2008 guidelines on conversion factors.
