You can offset the carbon dioxide of your air travel by making a donation to a project which reduces carbon production, as listed below. Two projects are now 'live,' with more to follow as we can arrange them with our partners overseas.
You can work out how much CO2 your air travel generates, and how much you need to donate to one of the special OA projects to offset this.
First choose your start and finish countries, then the airports in those countries.
Then let us know whether it's Return or One Way, and the number of passengers. The amount of CO2 to offset will update as you go along.
Please note that there is a minimum cost of £5.
How do we work this out?
The greenhouse gas emissions are calculated in accordance with DEFRA's 2008 guidelines on conversion factors.
Air flight emissions are calculated by multiplying the great circle distance between the cities by the appropriate emissions factor (Short-haul = 0.0983; Long-Haul = 0.1106), a Radiative Forcing Index (RFI) of 1.9 and an uplift factor of 1.09.
The RFI is used to incorporate non-CO2 warming effects, and the uplift factor is added to take into account the fact that many flights do not take the shortest possible route, and may involve circling before landing.
