The Operation Agri 2008 Appeal resources pack features projects in Uganda. Farmers there are literally "Gaining Ground", as they are enabled to use more of their land productively.
Providing oxen and ploughs to groups of farmers is producing bumper harvests in Busia, South-East Uganda. As well as ox ploughing, the farmers are being trained in simple organic methods to keep the soil fertile, and deal with pests. Families are now better able to feed their families, and also have cash crops to sell to pay for school uniforms and other needs.
The Beersheba project, in the outskirts of Mbale town in East Uganda, helps girls regain lost ground in their education. The girls are from disadvantaged families, and have dropped out of school. The project helps them with catch-up lessons. They also give them health education, and skills like knitting and basketwork.
Meanwhile in the capital Kampala, a tailoring class is training young people in a slum area, so they can earn a living.
Whilst the resources are suitable for your harvest weekend, they are equally useable at other times.
